Derek Lynch
Derek Lynch was born in Englewood, NJ, and currently lives and works in San Francisco. Derek graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in the early 80s with artists such as Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf. He was mentored by artists Frank Owen, John Seery, and Sandro Chia. Derek works to merge new digital photography with painting and Bay Area architecture to create new perspectives, focusing on San Francisco neighborhoods as his primary subject. The outcome can be whimsical and yet offers a serious socio-political commentary on the changes to our urban landscape. His art has been featured in solo and group exhibitions, most recently at Inclusions Gallery, SF; Schneider Museum of Art, Ashley, Oregon; Bedford Gallery of Contemporary Art, Walnut Creek, CA; SFMOMA Museo Gallery, San Francisco, CA; SFMOMA Artist Gallery, San Francisco, CA; Marin MOCA.
Hearts in San Francisco Project
The Hearts in San Francisco project debuted in 2004 with 131 heart sculptures, created by local Bay Area artists and auctioned by the Foundation in support of Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.
The Foundation raised nearly 3 million dollars for ZSFG in that first year. Today, we carry on this tradition by commissioning and auctioning a new set of hearts each year. The funds raised support those delivering on the promise of accessible and equitable health care for all in our city.
