The Foundation announced the much anticipated LEGO® Heart sculpture, Inside, created by Nathan Sawaya as part of the 2024 Hearts in San Francisco sculpture series. The Large Heart is made up of 88,748 LEGO® bricks and is now on display at the iconic San Francisco Ferry Building Marketplace.

The 18 new Hearts at the Ferry Building, as well as 10 Hearts from the Special 20th Anniversary Collection, are now available in the Hearts in SF auction, raising much-needed funds to support quality patient care at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.

“Nathan Sawaya’s LEGO®️ Heart is emblematic of the tremendous talent that the Program attracts, and we’re proud to uplift the work of this year’s cohort of local artists while finding homes for these Heart sculptures to further support quality patient care at ZSFG,” said Kim Meredith, CEO of the Foundation.

The award-winning Nathan Sawaya has multiple global touring exhibitions, including ART OF THE BRICK, which has become an international phenomenon and reinvents the way people see both LEGO® bricks and art. Sawaya is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, recognizing his artwork and cultural achievements. He has earned a top position in the world of contemporary art and has created a new dimension by merging Pop Art and Surrealism in awe-inspiring and groundbreaking ways. His art consists of playing with the material, color, movement, light, and perspective.

Sawaya had this to say about the inspiration behind the heart: “I was inspired to create a Heart sculpture that reminds us of what is inside all of us… just beneath the surface. And often that’s where the truth lies… just beneath the surface.”

All Heart sculptures will remain on display throughout the Marketplace until February 29th, with a brief hiatus from February 5th through 9th for the Hearts in SF Gala. For more information on this year’s Hearts and the artists behind them, please visit the 2024 Hearts in San Francisco website.
