Charles earned his bachelor’s degree, with a double major in comparative literature, with honors, and economics, at Stanford and earned his law degree at Boalt Hall at UC-Berkeley, where he served on the California Law Review and won an award for best brief in Moot Court. He practiced at Pillsbury Madison and Sutro in San Francisco, Cooley Godward and Hewlett-Packard Company in Palo Alto, and Apple in Cupertino, where he worked closely with Steve Jobs.

Charles then earned his master’s certificate in jazz guitar at Berklee College of Music in Boston, studied at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley and has put out two jazz CDs, each with half of his own tunes and half jazz standards, “Tall Drink of Water” and “Wooden Zipper,” and a third CD, “Fashion First” but in 2011 he suffered a traumatic brain injury.

In gratitude for the care he received at then-San Francisco General Hospital, Charles happily serves on the Board of Directors for San Francisco General Hospital Foundation.
